Martindale Abrasion Pilling Tester

Martindale Abrasion Pilling Tester

The Martindale Abrasion Pilling Tester is a laboratory equipment used to assess the resistance of fabrics to pilling and abrasion. It simulates the effects of repeated rubbing and friction, which can cause fabrics to develop pills (small, fuzzy balls) or snag (catch and pull out fibers).

Description

How it works:

  1. Sample Preparation: A fabric sample is securely clamped into the tester, ensuring it is held taut.
  2. Abrasive Wheel: An abrasive wheel, often made of worsted wool, is placed against the fabric sample.
  3. Rubbing Action: The abrasive wheel is then rotated back and forth, applying a controlled amount of pressure to the fabric. This simulates the rubbing action that occurs during wear.
  4. Duration: The test is typically conducted for a specified number of cycles or until a predetermined level of pilling or snagging is observed.
  5. Evaluation: After the test, the fabric sample is visually inspected to assess the extent of pilling and snagging. The results are compared to established standards to determine the fabric's resistance to these issues.
